He was found on the steps of a monastery in Rilara, with nothing but a note asking the monks to take care of him, and a small silver amulet. The monks took him in, and gave him the name "White Crane", in a veiled reference to the old children's tale of storks bringing babies. He was trained as any other novice would have been, until eventually, on his eighteenth birthday, a furious argument with the abbot about philosophy, and the nature of good and evil, drove him from the monastery to seek his fortune. His first port of call was a jewellers, where he had the amulet that was found with him examined. Surprisingly, it was merely cheap silver, with no magic or great value whatsoever, however close examination of the hallmark revealed that it had come from a jeweller in Tyr-Sog. After many long months of travel to Tyr-Sog, and searching for the jeweller, he discovered that the amulet he carried had been sold to a young bard by the name of Laurie, as a gift for his bride to be. Unfortunately, the jeweller knew nothing more about him, but he had heard the man say that he would be travelling on to Yabon. Crane set off towards Yabon, hoping against hope that he could find some sign of where his father had gone from there, and why he had abandoned him. Eventually, he found an old inkeeper in Yabon, by the name of Lucas, who had known the bard Laurie, his father. Appearantly, he'd committed an...indescretion, and attempted to seduce a duchess of a northern court. She had been scandalised, and had ordered him killed. It was while on the run from her assassins that Laurie had met Crane's mother, Carline. She hadn't known anything of this, and, upon finding out from a chance remark made by Lucas, she had left Laurie, still pregnant. Lucas didn't know what happened to either of them after that, but it seemed obvious that Carline had abandoned her child at the monastery, unable to fend for both him and herself, and Laurie had continued to flee from the duchess' assassins.
