Thersos Jaelre

Background

Age: 167 Class: Wizard Race: Elf Subrace: Drow Alignment: Neutral Deity: Kithairen Description: Before you stands a tall, rather thin drow, even by elven standards. He has stark white hair that is unusally long for a male, which he allows to freely flow down both sides of his neck, quite well grommed. He has a rather blank, calm expression that appears to result more from personal control over emotions than from any kind of peace with his surroudings. Bio: A native Olist Oribinn, Thersos Jaelre belonged to house Jaelre. House Jaelre is a lesser house of Olist Oribinn with no significant repute, primarily composed of merchants who conducted business and trade with non-drow denizens of the underdark. The Jaelre traded many things, including raw materials, tools, weapons and even slaves. Jaelre slave trading was limited to lesser races of the Underdark, such as goblin and kobolds, for the practical reason that these small physically weak races were the easiest and least risky to control. More unruly slave trading was left to other houses. Thersos is a drow with the usual desire to accumulate power and knowledge. However, the desire to explore the world was a trait not as commonly shared by his kind. While originally satisfied with simply studying the world about him and learning what he could from traders, he was unable to satisfy his desired to explore. Unable to find others sharing his spirit of adventure, he set out into the Underdark alone. Such an adventure proved quite perilous, even for a Drow. Thersos wisely choose to cease such an undertaking, but had not desired to return to Olist Oribinn. Instead he choose to leave the Underdark for the surface, if for no other reason than to avoid the hazards of fending for oneself in the Underdark alone. Once on the surface, Thersos found it difficult to get along with other surface dwellers due to the reputation of his people, condeming himself to a life as a hermite. Fortunately, he was able to come across a somewhat insane wizard name Katar Jadenar during his travels who did not mind his prescence. After talking with Katar for some time about his experiences, the wizard came to believe Thersos could become a useful apprentice. He began training Thersos in the arts of magic, but the training was short lived when the wizard got himself promplty killed in an bizarre accident resulting from a poorly thought out experiment. Wanting to continue his craft, Thersos had to resiegn himself to seeking out civilization. Thersos found himself once again in the wild searching for civilization, hopefully one tolerant enough to allow him to practice his craft. During this time, he developed a significant connection with nature, if for no other reason than to survive. He even considered simply living in the wild, but his thirst to continue the study of magic and his desire for power made him decide to continue to seek out civilization. Still, he found that the rigid dogma of Bareon Ca'Duz, a deity which he never liked to begin with and only reveried because because he was taught to reverie the deity as a child, no longer suited his lifestyle. He had abandoned the underdark and enjoyed his freedom. He also found that he had a certain fondness for animals, or at least the animals that did not try to kill him, and preferred there company to the reveried spiders of the underdark. Moreover, he found he almost preferred their company to actual people. Instead he chose to adopt Kithairien as his new deity, and deity that would respect his freedom and wishes, or perhaps simply leave him alone. While revering Kithairien has never become a central focus of his life, Thersos does pay hommage at his convenience. This arrangement oddly enough seems to be satisfactory to Kithairien, at least as far as Thersos is aware. Such a relation seemed to be ideal to Thersos, so he retains the Kithairien as his deity to this day. Eventually Thersos found a society that was willing to tolerate him, or at least its wizards were willing to tolerate him. After all wizards commonly dealt with strange oddities, so Thersos' heritage was less unnerving to such individuals as the population as a whole, whose members Thersos often haughtly ignored or even arrogantly mocked if he could get away with it, although always staying alert for those that might consider harming him. It is here that Thersos' quest begins, as he begins in earnest to truly become a wizard. Thanks in part to his upbringing, Thersos is a proud, power hungry hedonist. He lives for exploring and accumulating power, the latter of which he achives through advancing his craft. He tolerates other races out of sheer necessity and will work with them to further his goals. Prolonged contact with surface dwellers and perhaps the charitable totalage of his master have soften his heart some, perhaps to the point where he would even help someone else in need if it did not involve too much risk of personal injury. Thersos has grown to enjoy the company of friends, if just for the pleasure they bring, but he would certianly not give his life for them. He might just fight beside them though. Although a hermit for quite some time, Thersos has a strong personality. He tends to be highly cynical and sarcastic, and has an open disdain for authority. When approaching problems, Thersos is very pratical, and will not let either taboos or ambiguis morality enter in to consideration when attempting to deal with problems and challenges, or when trying to get his way. He does however, extend a measure a respect and gratitude for fellow wizards and for creatures of the wild, and even a little respect to rangers and those who have shown themselves cable in the wild, but regards others with general disdain. This is especially true with the lesser denizens of the underdark such a goblins and kobolds. Although Thersos has long decided that slavery is wrong, spending decades where those races where enslaved to his family has given him the impression that these racies are inhirently inferior, even more so than other non-drow.
