Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

EdTheKet's picture

So, I was having a discussion today on whether or not the new song of the Dutch winner of Idols (aka "American Idol" in the US) has a chance of breaking through internationally.

So I decided to ask the international Layonara jury!

Here's the song:

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Less annoying than a lot of songs I hear on the radio over here. I think it can make it yeah.

Not my cuppa' tea though.

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

The video is not available in my country.

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Har har, same message. "Not available in your country."

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Totally not my style of music. She lacks the falsetto shrieks of doom, the meat-grinder throng of a thousand guitar solos at once, any form of blast drumming or backward satanic messages screamed over the sound of people in sheer and utter anguish...

This is not metal. The goat demons in my skull cannot stomach girls with guitars unless they are strapped down with leather and spikes and set things on fire. Or at least let a fat woman play, why are we so sexist that every female artist need be a super-model? I don't need to want to mate with somebody to enjoy their music. That would have made things very awkward during my roadie days anyhow. Doubt Dio or Yngwie would have appreciated it much.

In any case, I envy you Europeans. In less than a few hundred miles away in any direction, you have the best metal bands on the face of the planet touring. Germany alone has more awesome metal fests than every state in the US combined. All we get over here is washed up old glam bands at best, more often than not some R&B or Hip Hop noise by some kid half my age grunting over a sampled loop he stole off somebody else's cruddy album. Trying to act all tough and gangster, when everybody with wikipedia access knows that he was born to rich LA parents with some momma's boy name like "Dwayne" or "Thurman", and not whatever street cred name he likes to call himself now. Sings about growing up in the hood when in all reality, the closest thing to a drive-by they ever were involved in was when they were quail-hunting on horseback during summer camp.

Actually I think one of them (metal, screamer, punk somthing) won the canadian idol a few years back, and hasn't one of them won in the american Idol?

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Eh? What nonsense is that?

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

ok, found another version on youtube

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

That's the dutch ..too stingy to spring for international viewing ..... ;)

Can't view it either - so my vote would have to be no if they do not intend to share :)

This is not metal.

Didn't say it was :)

I asked if it stands a chance of breaking through internationally :) (Maybe perhaps of its cheesyness? Its easy tune? Its high scream-along factor?)

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

I voted: Yes, I think this song can also be popular in other countries...

Why?

Because it follows the same foolproof formula to success that's been proven to work for decades.

- It has a simple melody that musically uneducated people do not find dull, instead it gets their foot tapping along.

- It's got a memorable chorus (remarkably the high notes).

- She's not an eyesore.

I, personally, dislike this kind of popjunk that doesn't differentiate from millions of other performers like that. If you can sing that well, why bury your talent in such a boring musical template. Originality is the key to the books of music history, unfortunately the industry also promotes this type of one-hit-wonders too...

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Call me a cynic, but in order to answer the question, a link to the singer's marketing and publicity team would be far more helpful than a link to the music...

Stole my line :D

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Personally? no, I don't like it. *points to reasons below*

It's too "mainstream" more or less.... but at least it isn't screamo... :p

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Aussie idol version vs. Dutch idol version of Climb Every Mountain.

Lordi won the Eurovision 2006 contest with this little song. YouTube - Lordi - Hardrock Hallelujah Such horrible glam style, but look at the metal message this song brings... "Cheer up gloomy goth girl, for while you will never be popular, the power of metal within you has the power to slay cheerleaders, and animate them into feral slut-zombies." Just even more evidence why Europe rocks the metal scene. ;)

So true!

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Has a nice voice but the song is pretty pants & I think everyone is bored to tears of 'Pop Idols' 'X Factors' and 'this country has talents'...

I wouldnt give these people the time of day personally. Its fastrack to the big-time and if I cant do it I dont think anyone should have the chance to make a cheap buck via gimmickery.

We've had our Liona Lewis's and Gareth Gates... how about someone actually makes it to the top on their own for a change?

*edit* Sorry if my cynicism comes over a bit strong, Ive been warned before :(

Haha, thats awesome! I never saw the video, its funny thanks :D

* especially love the drummer, looks like something out of a cheap horror film :)

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Hijack :

No comparison ... Aussie was brilliant

Dutch sounded like a high school student in the school production of The Sound of Music.

'Course no one sings it better than Julie Andrews

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

It's a decent song and many decent songs make it big. It's not the Beatles though, that's for sure.

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

She can obviously sing and she's pretty .. but not with that song. It was pretty .. *searches for a word* .. vapid. Besides, I didn't think the US market got interested in much anymore unless it was 'Pop Artist A' feat. 'Rap Artist B' or, alternatively 'Rap Artist A' feat. 'Pop Artist B'?

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

Soulz basically answered the production/marketing wise. It's a basic formula that has proof its mark since the 70's

Re: Poll: International breakthrough yes/no

That's a yes vote from me, it's cheesy enough to do well in most of the EU and it should do well in other places... the only time I was in China this was exactly the kind of decadent western "culture" they were listening to.
