iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

OneST8's picture

With the release of the new iPhone on the 11th, I'm now curious to know how many iPhone (and iTouch) owners we have in the Layonara community and what kind of interest there is in these devices in general.

I appreciate everyone's response!

Thanks!

PS: Any commentary regarding the iPhone providers (like AT&T, O2 or Rogers) is not really condoned as I don't want things to deteriorate or detract from the poll topic too much and doesn't really have anything to do with video gaming.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

If one more Mac-Cultist asks me if we have the iPad in stock yet, I'm going to snap. They watch the whole press release religiously, and roll to disbelieve the 2 month anticipated ship date uttered by Steve Jobs himself.

I would however like to see the iPad used in the same fashion as a steel chair in a pro-wrestling match.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

I'm quite odd in that I HATE all phones in general.

Not really what you guys probably wanted to hear on a 'phone' poll, but there you go. :)

What I really don't get, is why people always seem to be buying new mobile phones all the time, it's one of the things that gets me angry (though a lot of things do, heh. I admit I can be a grumpy bum.)

You hear them go on about how great the screen is, or how great the camera or games are... yada yada yada...

what they forget at the end of the day is, phones are used for PHONING people, it doesn't matter how flash it looks.

Despite not liking them, I think its best to either just have a landline, or a simple mobile to carry around (one of those older blocky ones that just phone and text and have b/w screens) for emergencies and such. They won't really break if you drop them, and they aren't as much money anyway.

*end of rant.* :)

Cell Phone = High Tech Teen Age Pacifier

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

I refuse to own one.[Cellphone]

I only care my work one when forced too.

Heck I turn my regular phone off freqently and don't have voicemail or an answering machine.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

I don't have an iPhone. My dad does and loves it (original 1.0). While 3G is what's being really touted on the new one, they both have wifi, and you are probably better off speedwise hopping on whatever accesspoint you can rather than using the actual cell network.

Also, for those thinking of the new one, from what I understand if you have 3G on, the already limited batery life of the iPhone becomes downright awful.

All that being said, Apple knows how to make products with style and it is a lovely device. There are probably a few too many restrictions on it though (namely carriers, which I won't go into at OneST8's reqest.)

There are some alternative cropping up and most of the manufacturers have a touch-screen style i-want-to-be-an-iphone type device. Some are good, some are not. It's worth going into a couple of stores to look at them in person though.

Finally for those blackberry addicts out there that are feeling left in the stone age, there are new pics and rumors running around the net of the Blackberry "Thunder" with no specific release date. The Thunder has a full device touchscreen and limited/no physical buttons. Depending on how you hold it, it either has an onscreen keybord in the full-style or the shuretype-style.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

I personally hate the cellphone enough as it is. The very concept that an employer can call you anywhere at any time and shriek at you with 15 messages to your voicemail because you didn't psychicly anticipate a shift change that you never agreed to is invasive to me. That relatives can sob on the voicemail how you're neglecting them because you decide to eat lunch without checking your voicemail every 5 minutes, argh! The world is already overnetworked. I keep my cellphone off as much as possible.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

I am with Minerva on this one, in fact Im going to phone and compare notes here...hmm actually not much point :)

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

We're really approaching the point where all of our mobile electronics are coming together. We already have (and, in fact, most are) phones that function as PDAs, alarm clocks, calculators, instant messengers, digital cameras, web browsers... Throw a juicy multi-core Atom-sized processor in there, a halfway decent OS, an intuitive (and functional) input system, and you have a Netbook that makes phone calls.

I think it's pretty sweet.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

I love the concept of the device. But the plans here in New Zealand are ridiculously high its not funny. Imagine this, in New Zealand you can own your very own Iphone for NZ$199 but have to pay $250 a month(yes a month) for contract for two years. Thats a whopping $3199 for an Iphone! Or I can buy it for NZ$1219.

So to put it this way. Love the concept. Hate the price that we have here.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

Have had it since it came out and love it. I plan to get the new one as well. I have been working in the mobile industry for more then 12 years I have worked on technologies that are in almost all of the high and mid tier phones out today. I choose the iphone.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

Kender- you are not odd. I too abhore phones.

Update : I got a cellphone for Xmas - yet to activate it, but it will be a prepay plan for emergencies only.

Office manager read me the riot act for not being able to contact me when not at work - don't even go there about the "I'm not working, what I do on my own time is my own business". I got an answering machine so she can at least "feel" like she can contact me, I can chose to ignore stupid questions.

Re: iPhone? iTouch? Smartphone? Love / Hate? Have one?

iphone rocks. That said, I use mine as little as possible. I've collected enough info on cell phone radiation and the potential health challenges from that radiation that I only use mine on speaker phone or earpiece, and use a ground phone whenever i can, rather than the cell phone.
