Would you attend LayoCon Online

jrizz's picture

If there was a LayCon on quest server would you attend. It would be a OOC event but you would use one of your PCs as your avatar. We would have seminars, events, open areas for meet and greets. Tell me what you think.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Should this still be a desire, I have created a Module and loaded a server. It's pretty basic, but you can find it in GameSpy, Under "Role Play". Server name is "The Ugly Server" and the default password is the same as for Layo.

It is not tied to the Layo databases, but if something is desired to log in and chat OOC or as something to do when the Layo servers are down for maintenance, feel free.

I am not anywhere near as adept at module creation as the Team, but if there is some else desired, email or PM me, and I'll do what I can.

If at any time the Layo GM Team decides this is not something they want up, it will be shut off.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

We talked about spreading out over a few areas like port hempstead's areas.

IRL would never happen as we are a small community and widespread.

IRC is way to linear.

The avatar issue is a good one. Any suggestions.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

oohh awesome!!!

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

These are all good points (barring a few LOL). When I first brought this up in another thread I had suggested we do it in a internet based virtual world like second life. The issue there is that second life has become nothing more then a porn shop :( (it was a good idea when it started). I am sure there are other VWs that might work.

I guess IRC (yawn) would work as well, we could just set up rooms for events. IRC just does not give you the feel of being there, but that is just me.

The issue with doing it face to face is the cost, for some parts of the world it would be to high. And if people had that kind of money to spend on Layo, well it could be put to better use supporting Layo. So I was looking for the next best thing to being there.

It was Ed's idea to do it IG, and I thought it was a good solution and one that would meet a lot of the challenges.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Mkay. The server's been shut off.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Ok. Try this.

Lag. Rather than Hempstead or some other locale in game, create a large, half lit location. Big open space, no placables. Why? Half lit, so the text stands out. The text is why you are here. The text is the medium. The idea is to mingle. To catch snippets of conversation and interject yourself into them. To do this, you need to be in talk range or in party chat. Party chat, IIRC, can contribute to lag. Lag makes things icky. Reducing the eye candy will help facilitate this.

Conditioning. If I log in, I won't log in as Galen. I will log in as Derek. I will have the little floaty text that says "Derek". Derek is a human. (Mostly) If this is an OOC event, then you should be OOC. Or, IC as YOU. No roleplaying allowed. Want to roleplay, log on to the live server and go to town. You want to get the know the person (not persona), it should be a reasonable representation.

YMMV.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

I agree with Laldiien. I log in as Rhynn/Shri/Eyafares/etc. To Act. To Roleplay. To be someone not me. As such, I associate these characters with well, fictional characters.

That said, Im not sure Derek is another character Lald has or if its him, as in a new 'avatar' made for him. Think if everyone made an avatar to represent just them, like me running around with a wooden plank brown hair human with Jessica above her head.

Think of the database problems with creating all that then deleting them all. Big problems. That said, we could do it on a new make shift server, with just one area....but there would be problems there too. Who would host it? how do you host it?

I don't think anything in game would be a good medium for this :(

That said I seriously wish we could do a Real life Layo-con..we''re just too spread out...

Aye. Derek is me. Derek is a 34 y/o man, one child, one ex-wife, and a penchant for bad-sci-fi. I play Galen. I log in and put Galen on when I want to escape from nutty drivers, insane users with delusions of compentency. He is an idealized version of me. He's polite, good looking and well liked. See? Nothing like Derek.

As far as a database issue, I am not fully versed in PW maintenance, but just creating a character on the server creates a .bic file. As long as we all log in to the "Meet n Greet area" we would have no attachment to the PW as well would not be getting quests, or interacting with the database. We'd all be wearing the default clothes we spawn with.

The upside that I see is if we all spawn as a level 1 human fighter wearing the same clothes with nothing to distinguish except gender and floaty text, it would enforce a commonality. YOU (Jessica) are just that, Jessica. You are not an epic Mage with godly skills. You are you.

The downside, for me anyway, is there is nothing to hide behind. There is no RP. It's just me. What if I take off the mask and people realize that I am really a schmuck? It's all text. You can't see my smile or the wrinkles in the corners of my eyes when I make a joke. I won't speak for anyone else, but if I was completely satisfied with who I was and what I am, I wouldn't feel the desire to log in and be someone else.

Huh. Plumbed the psyche a bit deep there. Need to make a witty, self-depreciating joke to deflect.

I'm tired.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Right, I know it may not be a problem if we all spawn level 1 fighters and make more .bic files

But, er...10328793462374234 bic files on a database that's already huge? If the size of all these characters didn't make a difference I don't think we'd really worry about having to delete characters we don't use anymore. Furthermore, think about after its done. Dorg or people with database access would have to go through and delete them all after they're used.

That's why I'm saying maybe if someone hosted a completley different "PW" with like, one big open area like you said. Everyone and Anyone can host a PW , its free I think, its when it starts getting to ungodly sizes or is up constantly on seperate computers that need high specs when it starts to cost (Correct me if Im wrong here I don't know how these things work).

Still, I'd rather be me, not an avatar. Seriously, if I wanted to be an avatar I'd be on Gaiaonline or something....

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Maaaybe. :)

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Scifibarbie

thats a great Idea to let people use permed characters

I don't have a permed PC but I'd be there if possible.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

LOL depends how many people Showed up my Pc gets very tempremental when theres 40 or so players all in the same area *grins*

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Since it would all be OOC could we use one of our permed characters?

Regardless...I would try and make it fer sure

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Just a quick note, if a new module was made and loaded on a server without a need for the database... all this would essentially amout to IRC with 3D avatars.

I personally fail to see how IRC is linear considering imagination and role-play require only words. In fact, this whole "using only words" bit is the premise and basic functionality of table-top D&D. There has also been talk of running IRC-based quest sessions in the spirit of D&D (using the aragen bot to do the die rolling) though that's a little off topic.

Back to the topic at hand, I voted no and for all the same reasons Laldiien has stated, thus me thanking him in his reply.

( Edit: ew, just noticed this was the 13th post in the thread on Fri the 13th :P )

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

It all comes down to this; I would much rather meet everyone in real life. I can log in and see avatars anytime. There is no substitute for a handshake in cyberspace...or a hug :).

Perhaps we can do east/midwest/central/west coast gatherings or something.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

there are more no votes then I thought there would be. Could some of the no votes give a reason, maybe it can be addressed.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

Id certainly try my butt off to make it to a real life layo meeting... but one in game just seems silly. We all see each other there all the time anyhow and I pretty much agree with Laldiiens points as to why it would be meh too.

Re: Would you attend LayoCon Online

1) Lag. That many people in one place cause lag. Lag is not a terrible issue for me, but it's annoying and I don't want to go out of my way to be annoyed.

2) People. I see your avatar on a regular basis. To me, a Con is a connection of people, not an extension of a fantasy. If this were being held IRL, I'd be there in a heartbeat. As it's being held IG, not a big push for me.

3) We have IRC. If the entire goal is to speak OOC and get to know each other, we have an IRC channel that is currently working.

4) I am conditioned that speaking OOC while logged in as Galen is *bad*.

These opinions are my own. The idea isn't a bad one, I simply am not enthusiastic about it.
