White Lotus

Background

"My master, Lo'Zhin, gave me the name 'White Lotus' when I was but a child. I have since forgotten my real name, if I ever had one. I know nothing of my parents; my master says that he found me sitting on the doorstep of his dojo, crying. I was 3 years old. He sent messengers to find my parents, but no one was found who knew of me. So he kept me, and raised me as his own." "From the start, he taught me the way of quiet strength and discipline. He taught me to fight, but more importantly, he gave me the wisdom to know when and why I should fight. 'Perfection of one's being must be approached not from one direction, but many,' he told me. Through his fighting arts, he taught me how to perfect the body. Through his words and my meditation, he taught me how to perfect the spirit. Through my studies and his teachings of Aragen, he taught me how to perfect the mind." "One day, when I was older and yearned to explore the world beyond the walls of the dojo, he sought me out and spoke to me. "As you must already feel, your time here is nearly over," he said to me. "You have learned all that I can teach you. The most important lessons must be learned on one's own. I have given you the tools to perfect the body and the spirit, and I believe you will achieve those goals in time. But there is one other direction from which you must approach perfection; perfection of the mind.'" "He told me of the art of wizardry, but admitted he had no such skill. This was his limitation in life, his failure; I was his redemption in that. He told me to continue my learning, and along its course, to explore the art of wizardry. 'Death is the ultimate destroyer of perfection, my child, and the final master of all living things. I am old, and with each passing day the spectre of Death looms nearer, and my knowledge will not deter it. To achieve perfection of yourself and preserve it, you must gain mastery over Death itself. To do this, you must achieve perfection of the mind through the study of wizardry. Then you will have the power to deny Death, and truly become master of your own being. Go into the world and learn what you can.'" "Thus I gathered my few belongings and left the dojo. I stepped out into an unfamiliar world, both exciting and forbidding. I started along the rough path leading into the country, with only one motivation to guide my footsteps: to follow Lo'Zhin's teachings and make him proud." It is immediately apparent what inspired Lo'Zhin to name this young woman White Lotus: her skin is very pale and smooth, like the flower that is her namesake. Her hair is dark brown, worn straight and cut to shoulder length, but it is normally concealed by a hood. Her eyes, often downcast in the presence of unfamiliar people, are pale blue. Her robes are simple, tied at the waist with a length of thin rope. She wears no other adornments. In spite of her simple attire and timidity, she has a confident bearing, and moves with the graceful ease of a well trained warrior. She approaches any battle with honor, discipline, and an unnerving calm.
