Bonus Spells

All spellcasters rely upon one main attribute for their magic. Their strength in this attribute determines much of their power as a character, including the maximum spell level they can cast, the strength of the spells they can cast (DC), and, in addition, how many spells they can cast.

Spellcasting classes gain a base progression of Spells Per Day, independent of their primary attribute. They will gain these, regardless of whether their primary attribute is thirteen or thirty. However, in addition to this base progression, characters with high primary attributes receive Bonus Spells. These represent their innate skill or power, rather than what they have gained through experience.

For a given ability score, the following number of additional spell slots per day are available.

Notes:

  • Characters with less than 10 in their primary spellcasting attribute can't cast spells associated with that ability. (E.g. A Sorcerer with an 8 Charisma could not cast Sorcerer spells.)
  • Characters do not receive bonus 0th level spells. Cantrips and Orizons are minor tricks, typically learned in the earliest stages of a spellcaster's development, and do not benefit as much as "full-fledged" spells from a high attribute. (Metamagic, however, can alter these spells to higher levels, where bonus spells are gained.)
  • "Bonus Spells Per Day" refer to spell slots, not spells known. These bonus spells are the number of extra times a character can cast spells of a given level.
  • Warning: A character must be able to cast spells of a given level in order to receive bonus spells for that level. E.g. A 1st-level Sorcerer cannot yet cast 3rd-level spells, though assuming he has a Charisma of 14 or better, he will gain a bonus 3rd-level spell when he reaches level 4.
